Cabinet Refacing

Cabinet refacing involves updating the appearance of existing cabinets by replacing doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, while keeping the original cabinet boxes in place, offering a cost-effective and less disruptive alternative to full cabinet replacement.
Here’s a more detailed explanation:

What is Cabinet Refacing?

Cabinet refacing is a process where you update the look of your kitchen or bathroom cabinets without replacing the entire cabinet structure.

What’s Involved:

  • New Doors and Drawer Fronts: New doors and drawer fronts are installed, often in a different style or material than the originals.
  • Hardware: Hinges, handles, and drawer pulls are replaced to match the new look.
  • Veneer: A thin layer of material (like wood veneer or laminate) can be applied to the cabinet face frames and sides to create a new finish.
  • Optional Add-ons: Countertops, backsplashes, and other upgrades can be added to complete the transformation.

Refacing vs. Refinishing

Refinishing: involves cleaning, sanding, and applying a new finish (like paint or stain) to the existing cabinet surfaces.

Refacing: involves replacing the doors, drawer fronts, and possibly the cabinet face frames with new materials.

How to Prepare for Cabinet Refacing:

  • Remove Doors and Drawers: Take off all cabinet doors and drawer fronts to access the cabinet boxes.
  • Remove Hardware: Disassemble all hinges, handles, and drawer pulls.
  • Clean the Cabinets: Clean the sides and faces of the cabinets and drawers with a solution designed to remove grease and oils.
  • Sand the Surfaces: Lightly sand the exposed surfaces with a medium-grit sandpaper.
  • Wipe Down Surfaces: Wipe down all surfaces with a tack cloth to remove dust.
  • Cut Veneer: Cut the veneer pieces to fit the cabinet surfaces, making sure to account for overhangs.
  • Apply Veneer: Apply the veneer to the cabinet surfaces using glue and heat.
  • Trim Edges: Trim the edges of the veneer to create a perfect fit.
  • Install New Doors and Hardware: Install the new doors, drawer fronts, and hardware.

Things to Consider

  • Cabinet Condition: If your existing cabinet boxes are in poor condition, refacing may not be the best option.
  • Layout Changes: Refacing typically doesn’t allow for major changes to the cabinet layout.
  • Material Choices: Choose durable and high-quality materials for the best long-term results.
  • Professional Installation: Consider hiring a professional for the installation to ensure a quality finish.
